Changes in the fees of legal proceedings

The new regulation will come into force on 28th January, 2025, and in accordance with it, the calculation of the fee payable when initiating civil legal proceedings will change significantly compared to the previous regulation.

In accordance with the current rules, the plaintiff is required to pay a fee equal to 6 percent of the value of the lawsuit when first-instance proceedings are initiated, with an upper limit of HUF 1.5 million. Therefore, initiating a lawsuit could not cost more than this amount, even if the legal dispute involved billions of Forints.

The newly adopted law introduces a nine-level, graduated system instead of the 6 percent rate and cancels the upper limit on the amount of the fee.

Due to the graduated system, the lawsuits with a lower value will become “cheaper” compared to the previous system: for example, for procedures worth HUF 10 million, one will definitely have to pay a lower fee than the 6 percent currently in force, and this is also true for some claims over HUF 10 million. However, the lawsuits above the value limit of HUF 24,435,714 will be more expensive than ever before.
